Chelsea’s technical director, Enzo Maresca, expressed his disagreement with the referee’s decision in the match against Bayern Munich, where his team suffered a 3-1 defeat. Maresca pointed out that Jonathan Tah, a Bayern player, should have been sent off in the first half of the match. The incident occurred when Tah and João Pedro got into a dispute off the ball, and the coach considered that the Bayern player’s action deserved a red card. Maresca’s protest over the referee’s decision earned him a yellow card.

For me it’s a clear red card. When there is no intention to go for the ball, only to kick the player, why isn’t it a red card? It’s not aggressive enough, said the referee. Do they need to see blood to show a red card? For me the intention was to injure, so there is no doubt.

On the other hand, Bayern’s coach, Vincent Kompany, had a different perspective on the incident.

I wanted a foul in the other direction, I thought he had been fouled. I may be biased. I think they pulled his shirt and he tried to free himself, and as a defender, you just want to get rid of it.

The match was marked by Harry Kane’s performance, who scored two goals for Bayern Munich. Bayern’s first goal came after a standout play by Michael Olise, whose shot Trevoh Chalobah deflected into his own net. Kane extended the lead from the penalty spot after being brought down by Moisés Caicedo. Cole Palmer scored a goal for Chelsea, but Kane secured Bayern’s victory with his second goal. Maresca expressed his satisfaction with his team’s performance despite the defeat.

Personally, I am happy with the performance, we knew how difficult it would be to come here against this team. We knew it would be a tough match, but overall we competed very well.

Enzo Maresca, Chelsea manager
Kompany played down any premature optimism about Bayern’s performance this season, but praised Kane’s work ethic. Kane, for his part, highlighted the importance of the victory.
