Scottie Scheffler Dominates at the Procore Championship

The preparation of the American team for the Ryder Cup became another week of success for Scottie Scheffler. The world number one demonstrated his prowess at the Procore Championship, securing the victory with an impressive final round of 67 strokes, five under par. Scheffler, seeking to stay in top form before the Ryder Cup from September 26 to 28 at Bethpage Black, achieved his sixth title of the season on the PGA Tour. This achievement places him in a select group alongside legends like Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer, who also won at least six times in consecutive seasons since 1960.

This was a tournament where I played on a new course, a course that was quite challenging to play for the first time. I did a really good job of staying in the tournament the first two days, and then, the last two, I played some really good golf to be in this position.

Scheffler overcame an eight-stroke deficit over Ben Griffin during the weekend, with rounds of 64 and 67, finishing with a total of 269 strokes, 19 under par. The victory allowed Scheffler to surpass $27.6 million in earnings this season. The tournament at Silverado featured the most competitive field and the largest public attendance since it moved to Napa in 2014. The competition between Scheffler and Griffin kept spectators on the edge of their seats until the last moment. Griffin, who will make his Ryder Cup debut at Bethpage Black, was close to victory, but his 60-foot eagle putt on the 18th hole came up short. His birdie attempt to force a playoff was unsuccessful, finishing with a 70.

I felt like I wasn’t as sharp from short range as I needed to be. But I’ll work on it this coming week and hopefully make every one of them in the Ryder Cup.

Scheffler, along with other players, considered the Procore Championship as an excellent opportunity for the Ryder Cup team to compete and stay in shape. Four Ryder Cup players finished in the top ten, with U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun in sixth place and Cameron Young tied for ninth.

We made the suggestion of taking an exploratory trip to Bethpage or coming here and playing this event. We felt it would be a little more valuable to get all the guys together here this week to play tournament golf in order to stay in shape.

Scheffler’s victory represents his 19th triumph on the PGA Tour and he is now preparing for the Ryder Cup, where he will face Europe, who has dominated in the last three decades. Lanto Griffin also had an outstanding performance, achieving a 65 and finishing in third place, his best result in almost four years. This propelled him to 100th place in the FedEx Cup standings.

It’s huge. One of my goals this week was to give myself a chance.

Scheffler, despite starting with a two-stroke deficit, remained firm. Although Griffin initially took the lead, Scheffler responded with birdies and ultimately secured the victory. Jackson Koivun, the world’s number one amateur, also had an outstanding performance, tying for fourth place. Koivun has achieved four consecutive top-eleven finishes on the PGA Tour.
