Cardinals lose Masyn Winn to knee injury

MILWAUKEE – The St. Louis Cardinals have called up infielder José Fermín from Triple-A Memphis after placing shortstop Masyn Winn on the 10-day injured list due to a season-ending knee injury. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol announced Friday night that Winn will not play again this year due to a meniscus tear in his right knee. Winn will seek a second opinion and then will likely undergo arthroscopic surgery in the next two weeks. He is expected to be at 100% when spring training begins in February. The injury also landed Winn on the injured list earlier this season. He said it has been bothering him for the past few weeks. Winn tried to play through the pain, but his knee didn’t respond as he or the team’s medical staff had hoped.

We took a couple of days (in Seattle), but it didn’t feel right there. I was hoping that after three days of rest it would feel much better and when I showed up yesterday, it was really difficult to hit and take ground balls.

Masyn Winn
In his second full season in the Major Leagues, 23-year-old Winn batted .253 with nine home runs and 51 RBIs. He became an elite defender, tied with Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. for the most outs above average in the majors. Winn committed only three errors in 501 opportunities this season, after 18 were charged to him in 2024.

He’s the best shortstop in the game.
