Verstappen Mocks McLaren’s Strategy at Monza
In the Italian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen, as he approached victory, couldn’t help but laugh at the situation of the orange cars that were following him. McLaren’s strategy, which involved Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, generated surprise in the paddock. After being informed that Norris and Piastri swapped positions by order of the McLaren team, the Red Bull driver couldn’t contain his laughter. “Ha! Just because [Norris] had a slow pit stop?” Verstappen commented. The situation unfolded after McLaren’s pit stops. Verstappen, who stopped earlier, conceded position on the track. McLaren, seeking to capitalize on a possible Safety Car, opted to pit as late as possible, a common tactic in F1. However, Piastri’s stop was impeccable, while Norris’s was delayed, relegating him behind his teammate and rival. McLaren intervened, requesting Piastri to yield the position to Norris for the sake of “fairness”.Norris recovered second place, which reduced his lead in the championship. Verstappen’s reaction, on the other hand, was different. In the press conference, the Red Bull driver avoided answering directly about how he would have reacted in that situation. The situation at McLaren contrasts with that of Red Bull, where Verstappen refused to yield position to Sergio Pérez at the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix. McLaren, for its part, has sought a fair deal for its two drivers, who have been in an intense battle for the title. Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, has highlighted the quality of his driver lineup. The fight between Norris and Piastri has been respectful, despite some tense moments.“We said a slow pit stop was part of racing. I don’t really see what has changed here. But if they want me to do it, I will.”
