Atlanta Braves’ Sean Murphy to Undergo Season-Ending Surgery
Atlanta Braves catcher Sean Murphy will undergo surgery on his right hip later this week, ending his season. However, the team is confident he will be ready for spring training. The decision to undergo surgery was made after an MRI performed on Monday revealed that Murphy has a tear in his hip labrum. He is expected to be out of action for approximately four months once the procedure on Thursday, performed by Dr. Thomas Byrd, is completed.Murphy, who was an All-Star in 2023, has a batting average of .199 with 16 home runs and an OPS of .709 in just 94 games this season. Rookie Drake Baldwin has had a solid season behind the plate for Atlanta, batting .276, with 15 home runs and 64 RBIs in 107 games.“It’s been bothering him for the last three years,” Atlanta’s president of baseball operations, Alex Anthopoulos, told reporters. “He said he would just endure it and play through it, and that it would come and go. But in talking to Dr. Burke today, I was amazed that he had been playing the last three years with a significant tear.”

“He never made excuses, but there were days when he would say, ‘I don’t know if I’ll be able to go, but I’m going to fight,'” Anthopoulos said about Murphy. “But it got to the point where he just couldn’t do it anymore. Even Dr. Byrd acknowledged that this was only going to get worse. He’s been trying to manage this for the last three years. He should be a much better player once this is resolved.”
