Dabrowski and Routliffe Crowned Women’s Doubles Champions at the US Open

In an exciting final held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe conquered the US Open women’s doubles title for the second time in three years. In a match full of adrenaline, the third-seeded pair defeated the number one duo, Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova, with scores of 6-4, 6-4. The victory marks a special milestone for Dabrowski, as it represents her first major triumph after undergoing treatment for breast cancer. The tennis player even delayed part of her treatment to be able to compete at Wimbledon last year, where she reached the final with Routliffe. For their part, Townsend and Siniakova were looking to add the US Open title to their impressive record, after having won Wimbledon last year and the Australian Open in January. Townsend became a prominent figure in the tournament, partly due to a post-match altercation in the singles competition. The American tennis player reported that her opponent made unfortunate comments to her, which sparked a debate about possible racial connotations.

That has been a stigma in our community of being ‘uneducated’ and all things, when it is the furthest thing from the truth.

Despite the defeat, Townsend had an outstanding performance in singles, reaching the fourth round. In doubles, alongside Siniakova, they reached the final of a Grand Slam for the fifth time, eliminating Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez along the way. Dabrowski, 33, a Canadian national, and Routliffe, 30, originally from New Zealand, shared a prize of one million dollars.
