Messi Opens the Door to His World Cup Future

The Argentine star, Lionel Messi, has cast doubt on his participation in the next World Cup, to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Although age plays a crucial role, the captain of the Albiceleste national team does not completely rule out his presence in the tournament. After playing his last official match at home in the South American qualifiers, where Argentina defeated Venezuela 3-0, Messi hinted at uncertainty. The Rosario striker, who scored two goals in the match, has kept the intrigue about whether this would be his sixth World Cup.

I don’t think I’ll play another World Cup. Due to age, the most logical thing is that I won’t make it, but we are there, I am excited, eager and as I always said, I go day by day, game after game.

The winner of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar emphasized the importance of feeling good physically and mentally. “And, above all, being honest with myself. When I feel good, I enjoy it, and if I’m not well, I have a bad time and prefer not to be. So we’ll see,” he added. Messi also reflected on how quickly time passes in high-level football. “At this point, nine months go by very quickly and at the same time it’s a lot. I’ll see how I’ll be feeling,” he said. Regarding his possible farewell from the national team, Messi expressed that it is not something he desires or expects, but that time moves on and feelings vary. Argentina’s next match will be against Ecuador in Guayaquil, where they will seek to close the qualifying phase as leaders.
