Sinner Advances to US Open Semifinals After Defeating Musetti

In a memorable night for Italian tennis, Jannik Sinner secured his place in the US Open semi-finals by defeating Lorenzo Musetti in a match that marked the first time two Italians faced each other in the quarter-finals of a men’s Grand Slam. The final score was 6-1, 6-4, and 6-2, demonstrating Sinner’s superiority in the match. Sinner, who seeks to defend his title, showed a dominant performance. His next challenge will be against Felix Auger-Aliassime, who managed to defeat Alex De Minaur in a close match. Sinner, with this victory, adds his fifth consecutive semifinal in a Grand Slam tournament. If he wins on Friday, he would reach the final in the four most important tournaments of the year. In addition, he has accumulated 26 consecutive victories in Grand Slam matches played on hard courts.

These are very special occasions. To find myself in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam again is a great achievement.

Wednesday’s match lasted only two hours, with a first set that was resolved in just 27 minutes. Sinner managed to defend all the break points he faced, a total of seven. In his five matches, he has conceded just 38 games, the second-lowest amount for a player to reach the US Open semi-finals since 2020.

Sinner’s effectiveness on serve was notable, winning 42 of 46 points with his first serve, which equates to a 91% effectiveness. In addition, he has won 31 consecutive service games. Musetti, for his part, was looking to reach his first US Open semi-final, after having reached that stage at the Roland Garros this year and at Wimbledon 2024. However, the start of the match was unfavorable for him, going 5-0 down and winning only nine points compared to Sinner’s 25 in the first set.

Honestly, I had never played against someone who put me under so much pressure in the rally, and I didn’t have many opportunities in the exchange and he always led the rally. So it was a bit of a bad feeling.

Even though Musetti improved his game as the match went on, he couldn’t break Sinner’s serve, which could have changed the course of the match.

We have to put friendship aside during the match and, obviously, when we shake hands, everything is fine.
