Najee Harris Could Be Ready for Chargers Debut
Coach Jim Harbaugh announced this Monday that running back Najee Harris has been cleared to participate in full-contact practices. This suggests that Harris could be available for the Chargers’ inaugural game on Friday against the Kansas City Chiefs in Brazil. However, Harbaugh did not confirm Harris’s participation in Friday’s game. “There’s a possibility,” he stated. “He’s looked very good in practice.”
Harris suffered an eye injury during a fireworks accident on July 4, which landed him on the non-football injury list before training camp. Additionally, Harbaugh reported that wide receiver Quentin Johnston has cleared concussion protocol. Johnston suffered a concerning concussion in the Chargers’ second preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams, remaining motionless on the field for several minutes. Johnston did not miss much practice and appears ready to play on Friday. Before Monday, Harris had worn a yellow jersey in practice, which is used by players still recovering from an injury. Harris looked agile in individual drills, but did not receive passes from quarterback Justin Herbert in the period open to the media. Running backs Hassan Haskins and Omarion Hampton caught passes from Herbert while Harris worked with quarterbacks Trey Lance and DJ Uiagalelei. Harris has never missed a game in his NFL career. If he couldn’t play, the Chargers would likely rely heavily on Hampton.
