Medvedev and Cervara: End of an Era in Tennis

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev and his coach Gilles Cervara have decided to end their successful collaboration, after a relationship that spanned several years and left a significant mark on the world of tennis. The pair began working full-time in 2017, when Medvedev moved from Russia to the south of France. Cervara played a crucial role in Medvedev’s rise, guiding him to the top of the world rankings and leading him to conquer the US Open in 2021. However, the current season has presented challenges for Medvedev, and the separation comes after an incident at the US Open, where the player had an altercation with the referee Greg Allensworth and showed his frustration on the court. This behavior cost Medvedev a considerable fine, equivalent to almost 40% of his tournament earnings, totaling $42,500. “Thanks Gilles. Incredible 8-10 years together, 20 titles, number 1 in the world, but most importantly, many fun moments and memories that will stay with us forever,” wrote Medvedev on his Instagram account.

The relationship between the two was not always smooth, with Cervara abandoning some matches due to Medvedev’s attitude on the court. Despite the challenges, the duo achieved great successes, including six Grand Slam finals. Cervara was recognized as the ATP coach of the year in 2019.

“Daniil. Our fantastic eight-season adventure together is coming to an end. As a symbolic nod to life, it is after this US Open tournament that we end our collaboration,” Cervara wrote on his Instagram account.
