Nemanja Matic returns to Italian football with Sassuolo

Experienced Serbian footballer Nemanja Matic has finalized his return to Italian football, joining Sassuolo for the upcoming season. The club, recently promoted to the top category, has secured the incorporation of the midfielder to strengthen its squad.

The official announcement was made by Sassuolo Calcio, confirming the signing of Matic until June 30, 2026. The contract includes an automatic renewal clause for the following season, subject to the fulfillment of certain conditions.

Matic, 37, arrives at Sassuolo after his time at Olympique Lyon, where he played for the last two seasons. During his time at the French club, he stood out as a key player in the team.

Throughout his career, Matić has played for renowned teams such as Chelsea, Manchester United, and Roma. His career includes spells at Chelsea (2009-10 and 2014-17), Vitesse (2010-11), Benfica (2011-14), Manchester United (2017-2022), Roma (2022-23), and Rennes (2023-24).

The left-footed midfielder has extensive experience in the Premier League, accumulating 251 matches. In addition, he has participated in 107 matches in European competitions and has represented the Serbian national team on 48 occasions.

His trophy cabinet includes important titles, such as three Premier Leagues, one FA Cup, one English League Cup, one Portuguese Championship, three Portuguese League Cups, and one Slovak Cup.

In his time at Roma, under the management of José Mourinho, Matić reached the final of the Europa League.

Sassuolo, managed by Fabio Grosso, achieved promotion to Serie A after winning Serie B last season. In their first match of the season, they faced Napoli, losing 0-2.
