Jets Bolster Defensive Line with Strategic Acquisitions

In a bold move to strengthen one of their weakest areas, the New York Jets have finalized two important trades that promise to reinforce their defensive line. The acquisitions of defensive tackles Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs mark a significant step in the team’s strategy for the upcoming season. The first agreement involved the Jets and the Minnesota Vikings, who exchanged sixth-round picks in 2026 and 2027, as well as a seventh-round pick in 2027, in exchange for Harrison Phillips. The trade is subject to a physical examination.

The Vikings agreed to cover $3.7 million of Phillips’ $7.4 million salary for 2025.

Phillips, 29, and with a career as a starter for most of his career, is set to be the starter alongside Quinnen Williams in the Jets’ base 4-3 formation. Previously, the Jets announced the trade of a sixth-round pick in 2026 to the Cleveland Browns, in exchange for Jowon Briggs and a seventh-round pick in 2026. Briggs, who had limited participation as a rookie last season, is expected to add depth to the team. The need for these moves was heightened due to the injury of Byron Cowart, who was on his way to earning a starting position. Cowart was one of the low-cost signings expected to contribute at the defensive tackle position. Phillips, selected in the third round of the 2018 draft by the Buffalo Bills, has 62 career starts. After signing with the Vikings in 2022, he became a key player, participating in all regular season and playoff games. Recognized for his ability to stop the run, he achieved a personal record of 92 tackles in 2023. The Vikings extended him a contract in September 2024, but his situation changed after the arrival of Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave, in addition to the development of young prospects on the defensive line. Before the transfers, Jets defensive coordinator Steve Wilks expressed his satisfaction with the competition at the position alongside Williams.

I think he’s doing very well, and I love that Jay Tufele has stepped up.

Wilks also mentioned Leonard Taylor III and Phidarian Mathis, highlighting the search for a balance that allows Williams to have less pressure.
