Bryson DeChambeau, Russell Henley, and Harris English Secure Their Spots on the Ryder Cup Team
The American team for the Ryder Cup, which will face the Europeans at Bethpage Black next month, already has its first members defined. Prominent golfers such as Bryson DeChambeau, Russell Henley, and Harris English have secured their place after an outstanding performance.
These players will join renowned figures such as Scottie Scheffler, J.J. Spaun, and Xander Schauffele, who also qualified by finishing in the top six in Ryder Cup points after the final round of the BMW Championship.
The U.S. team captain, Keegan Bradley, will have the task of selecting six additional players on August 27, three days after the final round of the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
Trajectory of the Qualified Players
Bryson DeChambeau, who at 31 years old won his second U.S. Open title in 2024, will make his third appearance in the Ryder Cup. In the 2018 and 2021 editions, DeChambeau had a record of 2-3-1.
For his part, Harris English, 36, joins the American team for the second time. In his Ryder Cup debut, English recorded a 1-2-0 in the Americans’ 19-9 victory at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin. English, currently ranked number 8 in the World Golf Ranking, earned his first PGA Tour victory at the Farmers Insurance Open in January.
Additionally, English achieved a tie for second place at the PGA Championship in May and a solo second place at The Open in Northern Ireland in July.
Russell Henley, also 36 years old, will debut in the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black alongside Spaun. Henley won his fifth PGA Tour tournament at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March, and then tied for tenth place at the U.S. Open and The Open.
Henley, positioned at fifth place in the OWGR, is recognized as one of the best ball-strikers on the tour. Before the BMW Championship, he excelled in total strokes gained (1.310), tee to green (1.049), and approach (.543).
Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, and Bradley completed the top 10 this week.
Bradley, winner of the 2024 BMW Championship, finished tied for 17th with 1 under par at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, on Sunday, 16 strokes behind Scheffler, who won for the fifth time this season.
Captain Bradley commented that he was still unsure whether he would choose himself as part of the captain’s selection.
The last playing captain of the Ryder Cup was Arnold Palmer, who led the American team to a 23-9 victory over the Europeans at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta in 1963.
Maverick McNealy (third, 11 under par), Sam Burns (tied for fourth, 10 under par), Cameron Young (11th, 5 under par), Griffin (tied for 12th, 3 under par), and Brian Harman (tied for 19th, par), who are vying for selection by the captain, finished in the top 20 at the BMW Championship.
The Ryder Cup will be held from September 26 to 28.
