The Boston Celtics: New owner and historic record in the NBA

The NBA Board of Governors has approved the sale of the Boston Celtics to a group led by Bill Chisholm, a renowned private equity magnate. The operation, which was finalized this Wednesday, values the iconic franchise at an unprecedented figure: more than $6.1 billion.

This transaction sets a new record for a professional sports team in the United States, surpassing any previous deal. The sale, which is expected to close in the coming days, will grant Chisholm control of 51% of the team immediately.

In addition, the agreement includes an option for Chisholm to acquire the entire franchise in 2028, which would raise the total value to $7.3 billion.

This milestone surpasses the previous record of $6.05 billion, paid by the NFL’s Washington Commanders in 2023. It also leaves behind the $4 billion that Mat Ishbia paid for the Phoenix Suns, the previous highest amount in the NBA.

Bill Chisholm, a native of Massachusetts and a graduate of Dartmouth College and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, is a managing partner at Symphony Technology Group, based in California. Also in the new ownership group are Rob Hale, current shareholder of the Celtics, and Bruce Beal Jr.

Wyc Grousbeck, the previous owner, led the acquisition of the team in 2002 for 360 million dollars. During his management, the Celtics achieved championships in 2008 and 2024.

With 18 NBA titles, the Celtics remain the most successful team in league history.

Chisholm managed to beat at least two rival bids, including that of former Celtics minority partner Steve Pagliuca.
