Spaun and Schauffele Join Scheffler on U.S. Ryder Cup Team

The U.S. Open winner, J.J. Spaun, and two-time major champion, Xander Schauffele, will join world number 1, Scottie Scheffler, on the U.S. team for the upcoming Ryder Cup. Spaun, after his second place in the FedEx St. Jude Championship, secured his place on the team and will make his Ryder Cup debut. Spaun, currently ranked number eight in the world ranking, lost to Justin Rose in a playoff at TPC Southwind.

For their part, Rose and Tommy Fleetwood have already secured a place on the European team, along with Rory McIlroy.

Spaun, 34, secured his first major championship with a 64.5-foot birdie on the 72nd hole of the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club on June 15. Schauffele, who won his first two majors at the PGA Championship and the Open Championship in 2024, has had a season with ups and downs, but remains a key player, seeking his third consecutive appearance in the Ryder Cup. The American team suffered a defeat against Europe in the 2023 Ryder Cup, with a score of 16 ½ – 11 ½. Golfers ranked between fourth and sixth place in the U.S. points ranking after the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club will also automatically qualify for the team. Russell Henley, Bryson DeChambeau, and Harris English are currently in the top six.

The U.S. team captain, Keegan Bradley, will announce six captain’s picks on August 27, three days after the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Justin Thomas currently holds seventh place in points, followed by Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, Bradley, Maverick McNealy, and Andrew Novak. Brian Harman (13th), Cameron Young (14th), Patrick Cantlay (15th), Sam Burns (16th) and others could also be in contention for a place on the team. The top six golfers in the European team points standings as of August 24th will qualify for the team. McIlroy, Rose, and Fleetwood have already secured their qualification through points, and Robert MacIntyre, Tyrrell Hatton, and Sepp Straka currently complete the top six. Shane Lowry, Rasmus Højgaard, Ludvig Åberg and Viktor Hovland complete the top 10 and appear to be in good form to be chosen by the captain if they do not secure one of the automatic spots. The LIV Golf League captain, Jon Rahm, is ranked 22nd and will be part of the team, which means Matt Wallace, Matt Fitzpatrick, Thomas Detry, and Aaron Rai could be competing for one or two spots.
