Sergiño Dest Shines in Eredivisie Debut with PSV Eindhoven
Sergiño Dest had a goal-scoring start to the new season of the Dutch league, contributing to PSV Eindhoven’s resounding 6-1 victory over Sparta Rotterdam.
The American defender, who also scored in last week’s Johan Cruyff Shield, scored a spectacular goal that went into the net in added time of the first half, putting PSV ahead 3-0 at halftime.
Ruben van Bommel, a debutant and son of former PSV player and coach Mark van Bommel, opened the scoring on his debut, followed by a goal from Ivan Perisic.
PSV didn’t slow down in the second half, with goals from Joey Veerman, Guus Til, and Yarek Gasiorowski, securing a resounding victory despite the visitors’ consolation goal.Sergiño Dest celebrates after scoring in PSV Eindhoven’s 6-1 victory over Sparta Rotterdam.PSV coach Peter Bosz expressed his satisfaction: “Scoring six goals is incredibly good and I am very happy with that. Good attacks, we played a lot of attacking football, showed great combinations in possession and also created many opportunities.”
Ricardo Pepi was not in the PSV lineup. Bosz explained that he didn’t want to risk the striker’s physical condition, but hoped to have him back next week.
This was the perfect start for Dest, after spending much of last season out of action due to an anterior cruciate ligament rupture that kept him out for 11 months.
Although he returned at the end of last season, the 24-year-old player did not participate in this summer’s Concacaf Gold Cup with the United States national team.
The United States coach, Mauricio Pochettino, said at the time that “the best decision is for the player to have an individualized training program for the summer so that he can focus on being fully recovered and ready to perform next season.”
Dest has 33 international matches with the national team, but hasn’t played for the United States since March 2024. If he’s in form, the right-back promises to be a key player for the United States ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
