Steve Tandy, the new Wales coach, reacted with surprise upon learning of Louis Rees-Zammit’s return to rugby. The player, who had been in the NFL for 18 months, announced his return to rugby via social media.

“My eldest daughter told me, it was a bit worrying. She said ‘Zammit is coming home!’ And I reacted, ‘Aaaaaargh. Pass me the phone!’ That’s how I found out,” Tandy commented in his first press conference.

Rees-Zammit, who played 32 matches for the Welsh national team, signed a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the 2025 season, but could now be available for the Welsh team.

Tandy, the first Welshman to lead the national team in 18 years, will begin his position on September 1st. Wales will face Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa in Cardiff in the autumn, and Rees-Zammit could be part of the team. The coach highlighted the positive impact of Rees-Zammit’s return, both for the player and for the sport and fans.

“Zammo brings a great effect and excitement to the return. I think it’s great for the game,” added Tandy.

Tandy also mentioned that the presence of more players available to represent Wales makes his job easier and makes selection more challenging. Rees-Zammit has expressed interest in your services, although his future in rugby is not yet defined. Abi Tierney, CEO of the Welsh Rugby Union, was enthusiastic about Rees-Zammit’s return and mentioned that they are looking at options to integrate him into the team, acknowledging that the player will have several offers.
