Dan Quinn Remains Calm Amid Terry McLaurin Trade Request
Washington Commanders coach Dan Quinn has addressed wide receiver Terry McLaurin’s trade request, describing it as a common aspect of NFL dynamics. Quinn emphasized that this situation does not represent a distraction for the team. McLaurin requested a change on Thursday, after negotiations for a contract extension stalled. The receiver, who is in a “hold-in” situation, was placed on the physically unable to perform list after reporting on July 27, and missed the first four days of training.Quinn commented that McLaurin informed him about his request before it was made public. The coach also noted that he did not consider it necessary to address the situation with the players to avoid distractions. The Commanders’ coach explained that today’s players are more informed about contracts and recognize the commercial nature of the sport. Quinn highlighted the team’s unity and their focus on their responsibilities, despite McLaurin’s trade request. According to sources close to the negotiations, the parties have been distanced for a while in their contractual conversations. Washington has been reluctant to offer McLaurin a contract with the highest figures in the market, considering that the receiver will be 31 years old at the beginning of the extension. McLaurin is seeking a contract similar to the one received by Pittsburgh Steelers receiver D.K. Metcalf, who signed a deal worth $32.5 million annually this offseason. Both players were selected in the same draft and have comparable statistics, although Metcalf is two years younger. McLaurin is in the last year of a three-year contract for $68.4 million and will turn 30 in September. Quinn admitted that he is not surprised that it has come to this point and that he is leaving the negotiations in the hands of the general manager, Adam Peters. We love Terry and we are very happy that he is here and we hope he will be training soon, but I also understand the business side of things. That’s what they are working on. I love coaching him.

McLaurin, Washington’s star receiver, is coming off a season in which he achieved the most touchdowns of his career, with 13. He has surpassed 1,000 yards in five consecutive seasons and has been selected for the Pro Bowl twice. Since his arrival in the NFL in 2019, as a third-round pick, McLaurin has been much loved by fans and respected in the locker room. Currently, McLaurin is undergoing rehabilitation for an ankle injury that bothered him at the end of last season. Despite this, he participates in meetings and attends non-contact training sessions. Both he and the team are hoping for his quick return to the field.I try to avoid judging him. I recognize that players are trying to secure themselves and their families, so I try not to put myself in that place. It’s too easy to say, ‘Man, if I had that much, I’d be this or that.’ So I don’t go there. I try to support him as best I can, but we don’t discuss the financial part of things.
