San Diego Padres Bolster Roster with Laureano and O’Hearn

The San Diego Padres continue to move strategically in the trade market, securing the arrival of Dominican outfielder Ramón Laureano and designated hitter Ryan O’Hearn from the Baltimore Orioles. This acquisition seeks to strengthen the offense of the Californian team for the end of the season. In the exchange, the Orioles receive a package of six prospects. This group includes pitchers Boston Bateman, Tyson Neighbors, and Tanner Smith; infielders Cobb Hightower and Brandon Butterworth; and Victor Figueroa, a versatile player capable of playing both infield and outfield.

Laureano and O’Hearn: Key Offensive Reinforcements

Ramón Laureano, 30 years old, is having an outstanding season. In 259 plate appearances, he has a batting average of .290 with an OPS of .884, proving to be an important offensive pillar for Baltimore before this trade. This is the third consecutive season in which the Dominican is transferred mid-year, having previously played with the Guardians and the Braves in 2024, before joining the Orioles in the winter. Ryan O’Hearn, 31, was selected for the 2025 All-Star Game, thanks to his offensive line of .284/.375/.452 and 12 home runs. He has established himself as an impact hitter, following a notable resurgence in Baltimore after difficult years in Kansas City. The Padres are confident that he will maintain his performance in this new stage.

Aggressive Padres Strategy

This trade is part of a series of moves made by Padres President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller. Previously, the team was reinforced with catcher Freddy Fermín, closer Mason Miller, starter J.P. Sears, and lefty Néstor Cortés, among others. With these additions, the Padres make clear their intention to compete at the highest level and aim for a ranking in the National League West Division.
