Wheelchair Tennis Returns to the US Open

Wheelchair tennis returns to the US Open after a break last year, due to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced on Friday the participant lists for the upcoming US Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships, which will begin September 2-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. This tournament will also celebrate the twentieth anniversary of wheelchair tennis at the US Open. These championships have experienced significant growth over the years, starting with the incorporation of a quad division in 2007, followed by the US Open, which became the first of the four Grand Slam tournaments to have a wheelchair tennis junior division in 2022, with singles and doubles events for boys and girls. The United States has six players in the competition, while the Netherlands leads with nine. Alfie Hewett, from Great Britain, will seek his third consecutive title at the US Open men’s, in a draw that includes the Wimbledon champion, Tokito Oda, current world number one, who aspires to a Golden Slam, which includes the four Grand Slams and the Paralympic Games. Diede de Groot, from the Netherlands, has the opportunity to become the female champion with the most victories, if she achieves her seventh consecutive individual title. She is currently tied with Esther Alf Vergeer, who retired in 2013.
