Matthew Stafford Delays Return to Rams Training
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, who is dealing with back discomfort, will not return to practice next week as expected, according to coach Sean McVay on Saturday. Last week, McVay had stated that Stafford, 37, would be limited at the start of training camp, but that he was “absolutely” expected to be ready for the regular season. Even after Stafford returns to training, the Rams plan to keep the quarterback on a modified schedule, along with some other veteran offensive players. On Saturday, McVay clarified that Stafford has not suffered any setbacks, but that it seems “most sensible to go week to week with him.”McVay reiterated that the goal is for Stafford to be ready for the Rams’ inaugural game against the Houston Texans and that he has “no reason to worry” that Stafford will not practice on Monday. During the first week of training camp, Stafford has spent most of his time away from the field, working with the Rams’ training staff. On Saturday, he observed part of the training from the field. In 16 games last season, Stafford completed 65.8% of his passes for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns. He didn’t play in the last game of the regular season because the Rams had already secured the NFC West.I don’t think we can be smart enough with someone like Matthew [Stafford] and I think it’s best for him, best for our football team, and that’s the plan we’ll have going forward.
