Owen Farrell, named captain by his father, led the British & Irish Lions in a match that proved more complicated than expected against the First Nations & Pasifika XV (FNP) in their first full match of the tour of Australia. The match, witnessed by a crowd of 30,000 spectators at Docklands Stadium, started promisingly for the Lions, who managed a 14-0 lead in the first 11 minutes. However, the game became more difficult with Darcy Graham’s injury and the reaction of their opponents, who threatened to snatch victory before losing 24-19. Farrell, who was actively involved from the beginning, contributed to some of the Lions’ four tries and demonstrated solid defense.

I enjoyed being there. It’s been pretty good so far and there’s a lot more to come. I’m glad I’ve played a small part so far.

Farrell’s call-up by his father and head coach, Andy, generated controversy for various reasons. After replacing Elliot Daly, Farrell hadn’t played an official match since 2023 and was coming off a season affected by injuries with Racing 92. Now, it seems inevitable that Farrell will participate in the series against the Wallabies, despite the strong competition in the midfield. Andy Farrell, when evaluating his son’s performance, offered measured praise, highlighting the precise pass with his left foot that set up Jamie Osborne’s first try and “some nice touches with the ball”.

There are always things to work on.

Head coach Farrell faces selection challenges before the second match, with Darcy Graham and Mack Hansen doubtful to play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where the Lions will seek to secure the series. Joe McCarthy is also dealing with a foot injury. There was concern for Marcus Smith, who left the field after a head injury, but Andy Farrell confirmed that Smith had passed the concussion assessment. Farrell was optimistic about the return of Blair Kinghorn and Garry Ringrose, who finished the match without problems.

If you can’t prepare for what’s coming, we’re all in the wrong place. For me, this is the most important match of our lives, each of us, that’s part of our team.
