Kaapo Kakko Secures His Future with the Kraken: Signs Three-Year Contract

Forward Kaapo Kakko has reached a three-year contract agreement with the Seattle Kraken, as announced this Tuesday. The contract has an average annual value of $4.525 million. Kakko, 24, was acquired by the Kraken on December 18, coming from the New York Rangers, in exchange for defenseman Will Borgen, a third-round pick in 2025 and a sixth-round pick in 2025. The Finnish player was selected second overall in the 2019 NHL draft by the Rangers. Last season, Kakko reached a personal best of 44 points, including 14 goals and 30 assists, in 79 games played between the Rangers and the Kraken. His 30 assists also represented his career best.

“Securing a contract with Kaapo was a priority this summer,” stated General Manager Jason Botterill. “We knew quickly that he would be a key piece for our team in the future. He has size, skill, and a great ability to create plays, and he isn’t afraid to go in front of the net. He integrated immediately with our group, and we are thrilled to have him under contract.”

In addition, he tied his personal record for points in a game, with three assists in Seattle’s 4-2 victory against the Los Angeles Kings on January 18. Kakko ranked second in points, third in assists and power-play goals, and sixth in goals for Seattle.
