Aaron Nola Advances in His Recovery: Next Step, Minor League
Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola continues his recovery process after the injuries that have kept him off the field since May. This Friday, Nola completed a 56-pitch throwing session, marking a significant milestone in his return. According to sources, Nola could make his first rehabilitation opening in the minor leagues next week.Nola suffered an ankle injury during agility drills on May 8. After two underperforming starts, he was placed on the injured list on May 15. After a bullpen session on June 1, Nola felt discomfort, and an MRI revealed a stress fracture in a rib. Phillies manager Rob Thomson revealed the injury on June 10.The ankle took longer than I thought, but it felt really good today, and the rib also felt really good.

This is the first time Nola has been on the injured list for a physical injury since 2017. Before the injury, his record was 1-7 with an ERA of 6.16 in nine starts and 49 2/3 innings.I’d like to see him get to at least 90 pitches. The first time, it will probably be the same as today, 55 or 60 pitches. And then we’ll start increasing by 15 pitches per outing to get to 90.

In his 11 seasons in the Major Leagues, Nola has a record of 105-86 and an ERA of 3.78 in 277 starts. With an injured ankle, he allowed 13 runs in 8 2/3 innings.I feel like I still have a lot of bullets right now. But, obviously, I also have to be smart about it.

Nola explained that the ankle injury caused the problem in the rib.I use my ankle a lot more than I thought. Both ankles.

I couldn’t rotate as much as I usually do. I guess my rib took the brunt of the work and ended up suffering a stress fracture.
