Jon Rahm Suggests Sergio García as Captain of the European Team in the 2031 Ryder Cup
The Spanish golfer Jon Rahm already has in mind who should lead the European team in the 2031 Ryder Cup. After the announcement that the Camiral Golf Resort in Spain will host the competition in 2031, Rahm considers that his compatriot Sergio García is a logical option to captain the European team. The only previous time Spain hosted the Ryder Cup was in 1997 at Valderrama, where the also Spanish Seve Ballesteros captained his team to victory. García, 45 years old, is one of the most outstanding players in the history of the Ryder Cup. In ten participations, from 1999 to 2021, he achieved a record of 25-13-7 in individual matches, and no one has equaled his 28.5 points obtained. The golfer could increase his account if captain Luke Donald selects him for this year’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, New York. García commented that he could contribute a lot to the team. “I think I can bring things to the team that, any team, would probably need,” García told reporters after making the cut at last week’s Open Championship. “Obviously, at the end of the day, he will make the decision that he thinks is best for him and his team. We’ll see.”I think there’s something to be said about the possibility of having, obviously, a local captain. I think it would be wonderful for the public. If history teaches us anything, and it’s very difficult to compare anyone to Seve, but I’ve only heard stories about how that Ryder Cup was. I would say that, if possible, I think it’s a very good obvious choice to have Sergio as part of that.
