Chris Paul Returns to the Clippers with his Number 3
Chris Paul’s return to the Clippers is not only a fact, but it also implies the return of the iconic number 3 on his jersey. Lawrence Frank, president of basketball operations for the franchise, confirmed that Paul will continue to use the number he has worn during his 20-year NBA career.
Bradley Beal, who has also worn the number 3 in his career, initially with the Washington Wizards and later with the Phoenix Suns, offered to give up the number to Paul. Beal will decide what his jersey number will be later.
“He has worn the number 3 his entire NBA career… But he also knows what that jersey means to Chris and there’s a reason why it’s ‘CP3.’ And just the importance of Chris returning to the Clippers. Brad offered to give Chris his number.”
Frank revealed that Beal, upon learning of Paul’s possible arrival, expressed his desire to give him the number. Paul, 40 years old, returns to the team with which he played six seasons, from 2011 to 2017, and where he still leads in assists and steals per game. Although his role will be different in this second stage, he is expected to contribute his experience and leadership from the bench.
Frank explained that the team consulted James Harden and Kawhi Leonard about Paul’s incorporation. Harden, who played with Paul in Houston, highlighted Paul’s ability to see the game, his leadership skills, competitiveness, and work ethic.
Paul’s arrival completes an active offseason for the Clippers, who also re-signed James Harden, signed Bradley Beal, and added John Collins and Brook Lopez.
