Tyrann Mathieu Announces His Retirement from the NFL

New Orleans Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu has announced his retirement from the NFL this Tuesday, just before the start of the team’s first training camp practice. The news took many by surprise, especially after Mathieu participated in the team’s veteran minicamp. The 33-year-old player hangs up his cleats after 12 seasons in the league, including three seasons with the Saints.

As I hang up my shoes, I am filled with gratitude as I close this chapter of my life and officially retire from the game that has shaped me in every way.

Mathieu, known as “The Honey Badger” since his time at LSU, stood out for his ability to generate turnovers. Throughout his NFL career, he achieved seven forced fumbles, eight fumble recoveries, 11 sacks, and 36 interceptions. He was selected in the third round of the draft by the Arizona Cardinals in 2013, the team with which he played his first five seasons. Then, he went through the Houston Texans. In addition, he was part of the Kansas City Chiefs from 2019 to 2021, being a key player in the Super Bowl LIV winning team. Mathieu was named All-Pro three times and participated in three Pro Bowls.
