Dominant Lions Triumph in Brisbane

The British and Irish Lions secured a convincing victory over Australia with a score of 27-19 in the first Test held in Brisbane. The match left outstanding performances and key moments that consolidated the team’s triumph. The performance of the third line, made up of Tom Curry, Tadhg Beirne and Jack Conan, was especially praised by coach Andy Farrell, who demonstrated great understanding and solid play in defense and attack.

Player Evaluation

  • Ellis Genge, Prop: 7
He had good runs at the beginning, but conceded some penalties in the scrums. The Lions’ scrum didn’t manage to dominate as much as expected.
  • Dan Sheehan, Hooke: 8
Showed smart plays from the lineout and was immense with the ball in hand. Sheehan performs the fundamentals excellently, is difficult to take down and gives his team the advantage.
  • Tadhg Furlong, Prop: 7
He hasn’t played much test rugby recently and took a while to get into the rhythm, conceding some penalties, but was still strong on both sides of the ball.
  • Maro Itoje, Lock: 7
He spurred his team with good direct runs, but the Lions captain was somewhat quiet in Brisbane, partly because those around him played very well.
  • Joe McCarthy, Block: 8
Super strong in contact and in the breakdown. There was some concern when he came off limping in the second half. Worked well with Itoje.
  • Tadhg Beirne, Flanker: 9
Player of the match, deservedly. His selection was in the spotlight and he answered all the questions asked. He dominated the individual duels and was very strong in the breakdown.
  • Tom Curry, Flanker: 9
He got a well-deserved try. He caused headaches for the Australians throughout the match and was strong in defense, making great plays.
  • Jack Conan, No. 8: 8
He made great runs to put his team in the lead or get them out of trouble. He laid the groundwork for the backs to work their magic on offense.
  • Jamison Gibson-Park, Scrum-half: 9
He played very intelligent rugby and always chose the right option. His kicks were almost perfect and his passes excellent. A classy player and combined well with Finn Russell.
  • Finn Russell, Fly-half: 9

His total impact became evident when he left the field. Russell was in great form from the first whistle until he was replaced by Marcus Smith in the second half. The Lions’ attack was working very well when he was in control.

  • Sione Tuipulotu, Inside Centre: 8
He opened the scoring and was always an option in attack, working well with his Scottish teammate Russell. He looks dangerous every time he has the ball.
  • Huw Jones, External Center: 8
He made good runs to put his team in the lead. He created many opportunities and was unlucky that his try was disallowed for a double movement.
  • James Lowe, Left Wing: 7
Some good touches, but a couple of deflected kicks. He probably would have liked to have had more impact, but he also didn’t receive as much of the ball as he would have liked.
  • Tommy Freeman, Right Wing: 7
Like his teammate and wing partner Lowe. Some good runs, but not his best game from a kicking point of view.
  • Hugo Keenan, Fullback: 7
A bit of everything for the Irishman. Beaten in the air for Australia’s first try, but covered the back field well and had some good touches.

Substitutes

  • Ronan Kelleher: N/A
He only played a few minutes, but he did enough to keep things stable.
  • Andrew Porter: 6
Performance similar to Genge’s. Some good runs, but the scrum didn’t go as planned.
  • Will Stuart: 7
Good performance after replacing Furlong. He did his job well.
  • Ollie Chessum: 7.5
He imposed himself physically, but not to the level he had during the tour matches.
  • Alex Mitchell: N/A

Just a few minutes at the end.

  • Marcus Smith: N/A

Just a few minutes at the end.

  • Bundee Aki: 8
He brought a lot of physicality to the midfield when he came on and was difficult for Australia to handle.
