Derik Queen will miss the start of training camp after surgery
New Orleans Pelicans rookie Derik Queen will likely miss at least the start of training camp after undergoing surgery on Friday to repair a torn ligament in his left wrist.
Queen suffered the injury on Tuesday while playing in an NBA Summer League game.
The Pelicans reported that Queen will be re-evaluated in approximately 12 weeks, meaning the evaluation will take place after training camps have begun.
The procedure on Friday was to treat a torn scapholunate ligament. It was performed by Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles.
Queen, who is 6 feet 9 inches tall, was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year after averaging 16.5 points for Maryland. His last-second shot against Colorado State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament led the Terrapins to the Sweet 16, where they lost to eventual national champion Florida.
He was selected with the 13th pick in the draft by Atlanta and the Pelicans acquired his rights in a trade.
