Freddy Peralta makes history with the Rays in the Championship Series
Dominican pitcher Freddy Peralta has left an indelible mark on the Major League postseason. With a masterful six-inning shutout performance, the right-hander was the key piece in the Tampa Bay Rays’ 3-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians, tying the American League Championship Series at one win apiece.
Peralta joined an elite group of Dominican pitchers by recording six scoreless innings in this decisive stage. Only the immortal Pedro Martínez and Edinson Vólquez had achieved a similar feat in the history of the Championship Series for a pitcher born in Quisqueya.
Absolute dominance from the mound
During his time on the mound, the Dominican allowed just four hits, issued two walks, and struck out six opponents. His performance was not only effective but imposing, reaching a maximum velocity of 99.4 miles per hour with his fastball, the highest figure in his entire professional career.
I think I was obviously able to put up a lot of zeros, but I was also able to avoid a lot of damage, because they were putting together some really good at-bats. I like these kinds of games. As a Dominican pitcher, I enjoy this. I grew up watching these games in the Dominican Republic and I feel like I carry that inside me.
Freddy Peralta, Tampa Bay Rays pitcherUnstoppable streak for Tampa Bay
The moment Peralta is going through is exceptional. Since August 26, the Rays have emerged victorious in each of his eight starts. During this span, the pitcher has recorded a 0.81 ERA, allowing only four runs in 44.2 innings of work.
Rays manager Kevin Cash highlighted the importance of Peralta’s arm strength to neutralize the opposing offense:
- When you have a fastball with that velocity, it is a very difficult pitch to hit with authority.
- The defensive support and execution in critical moments allowed them to capitalize on Cleveland’s errors in the fourth inning.
- The victory was sealed by the bullpen, with Bryan Baker securing the save to maintain the lead.
With the series tied, the Rays now travel to Cleveland’s Progressive Field for the third game. The Tampa Bay team arrives with high morale, boosted by the confidence that comes from having a starting pitcher in such dominant form as the one Freddy Peralta has shown.
