Rains and extreme heat persist in the Dominican Republic: Forecast for this Thursday
The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) has issued a detailed report on the weather conditions that will prevail this Thursday across the national territory. Although the tropical wave that was affecting the country is moving away toward the western portion of Haiti, the atmosphere remains loaded with moisture and instability, which guarantees the continuation of rainfall in various provinces.
During the morning, cloudy skies are expected with scattered showers and thunderstorms in strategic points such as La Altagracia, San Pedro de Macorís, San Cristóbal, Peravia, Barahona, and Greater Santo Domingo. As the afternoon progresses, daytime heating and the influence of the east/southeast wind will intensify rainfall activity.
Areas under weather alert
Due to the risk of urban flooding, overflowing rivers, streams, and potential landslides, Indomet has updated the alert levels. Currently, the provinces under surveillance are:
- San Pedro de Macorís
- San Juan
- Greater Santo Domingo
The authorities have discontinued the alerts previously issued for Hato Mayor, Valverde, Monte Plata, La Altagracia, and La Romana, urging the population in the areas under warning to stay informed through the official channels of Alofoke Deportes.
Moderate downpours, thunderstorms, and wind gusts are forecast for the afternoon in provinces such as Azua, La Vega, northern San Juan, Pedernales, Independencia, Valverde, Dajabón, Santiago Rodríguez, Puerto Plata, and Montecristi.
Recommendations for intense heat
The environment will remain hot with a high heat index, recording maximum temperatures that will range between 33 °C and 35 °C. To mitigate the effects of the heat, citizens are recommended to follow these preventive measures:
- Stay hydrated by drinking water frequently.
- Wear light clothing, preferably in light colors and loose-fitting materials.
- Stay in cool and ventilated places.
- Avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Tropical surveillance and conditions in the capital
Regarding cyclonic activity, the meteorological agency is keeping under observation an area of showers and thunderstorms associated with a trough east of Bermuda. This system has a low probability of cyclonic development, estimated at 10% for both the next 48 hours and the following seven days.
In the National District and Greater Santo Domingo, the day will begin with cloudiness and morning showers, giving way to a day where humidity conditions will continue to set the meteorological pace in the metropolitan area.
