Brice Matthews Called Up to the Major Leagues by the Astros

The number one prospect of the [Houston Astros](/mlb/team/_/name/hou/houston-astros) will have the opportunity to prove his worth. The team has called up second baseman [Brice Matthews](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/4838117/brice-matthews) from Triple-A Sugar Land this Friday. The Astros have not yet announced the corresponding move. Matthews’ contract was acquired from Sugar Land before the three-game home series against the [Texas Rangers](/mlb/team/_/name/tex/texas-rangers). Matthews’ promotion to the Major Leagues will prevent him from participating in Saturday’s MLB Futures Game in Atlanta, despite having been selected after a productive first half in Sugar Land. In 73 games, he batted .283 with an OPS of .876, 10 home runs and 39 RBIs, while his 25 stolen bases place him fourth in the Pacific Coast League. The 23-year-old player, who has also played shortstop and made an appearance in center field this season, was named Minor League Player of the Month for the Astros in June, when he batted .306 with four home runs and 16 RBIs in 25 games. This happened after he hit for the cycle in a May 10 game against the [Sacramento River Cats](/mlb/team/_/name/sac/sacramento-river-cats). Matthews, a Houston native, was selected with the 28th overall pick in the 2023 draft from Nebraska. He was ranked as Houston’s top prospect by MLB Pipeline.
