Tension in the Strait of Hormuz: United States intensifies maritime blockade against Iran

The United States Central Command (Centcom) has reported significant results in its maritime security strategy. Over the last 60 days, U.S. forces have managed to prevent the transit of 100 commercial vessels to or from Iranian ports, consolidating what they have termed a steel wall in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the official report issued from the Command headquarters in Florida, the effectiveness of the operation has been absolute. To date, no vessel has managed to breach the blockade without first having the express authorization of the U.S. forces, who maintain a constant and focused deployment in the area.

Context of military operations

This phase of restrictions began on July 14, following President Donald Trump’s decision to terminate the framework ceasefire agreement with Iran. The measure is a response to the persistent attacks recorded against international vessels navigating this strategic route. Previously, between April and June, the operation had already managed to divert more than 140 vessels and disable nine ships that ignored warnings from the authorities.

Centcom forces have redirected 100 commercial vessels over the last 60 days since the United States resumed the blockade against Iran.

Impact on markets and diplomatic perspectives

The situation has had direct repercussions on the global energy sector. Following the resumption of cross-attacks on August 30, the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude closed the week trading at 100.5 dollars per barrel, reflecting the uncertainty in one of the most critical trade routes on the planet, through which 20 percent of global crude oil circulated before the start of the conflict in February.

On the diplomatic front, a key meeting is expected in Muscat, Oman, where representatives from Iran and Persian Gulf countries will seek to establish provisional and secure maritime routes for trade. For his part, President Trump has indicated that he foresees an outcome to the confrontation after the midterm elections to be held on November 3, also projecting a possible stabilization in oil prices after that period.
