Lil Durk found not guilty in federal murder-for-hire trial
Renowned American rapper Lil Durk, whose legal name is Durk Banks, has been found not guilty of the five federal charges brought against him. The verdict was delivered by a jury in Los Angeles following a judicial process that examined his alleged involvement in a murder-for-hire plot, a case that kept the music industry in suspense.
The accusation linked the artist to a violent incident that occurred in August 2022, near the Beverly Center in Los Angeles, whose main target was the rapper Quando Rondo. Although the latter survived the attack, the event resulted in the death of his cousin, Saviay’a Robinson, known as Lul Pab.
Judicial process details
After three days of deliberations, the federal jury determined that there was insufficient evidence to convict the rapper. The charges for which he was acquitted included:
- Conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire.
- Interstate stalking.
- Use of interstate commerce facilities in the commission of a crime.
- Stalking resulting in death.
- Use of dangerous weapons in stalking acts.
Lil Durk’s defense team successfully managed to challenge the credibility of the cooperating witnesses presented by the prosecution, in addition to casting doubt on the strength of the evidence that attempted to directly link the artist to the planning of the attack.
The origin of the accusation
The Public Prosecutor’s thesis maintained that Lil Durk had financed and organized the attack as a retaliatory measure following the death of King Von, his close collaborator and friend, which occurred in 2020. However, the rapper’s legal team always maintained his innocence, categorically rejecting any involvement in the conspiracy.
During the trial, federal judge Michael W. Fitzgerald oversaw the proceedings, addressing jury inquiries regarding the intent necessary to establish the charged offenses. By being acquitted of all charges, Lil Durk avoids a potential life sentence, a penalty he would have faced had he been found guilty of the most serious crimes presented in the case.
