Mirador Sur Park is officially renamed in honor of former President Joaquín Balaguer
The Mayor of the National District, Carolina Mejía, led the protocol ceremony for the unveiling of the plaque that formalizes the name change of the Mirador Sur Park, which now bears the distinction of Dr. Joaquín Balaguer Mirador Sur Park. This action is in compliance with resolution number 03-2019, issued by the capital’s Council of Aldermen, in recognition of the figure of the late former president.
During the ceremony, held at the kilometer zero of this emblematic green lung of the city, Mejía highlighted the importance of valuing the history and the works that have marked the nation’s development.
Because the best way to honor a man who has worked and dedicated himself to a country is by preserving his legacy and his works.

A long-overdue recognition
The senator for La Vega and first vice president of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC), Ramón Rogelio Genao, positively assessed the mayor’s management in materializing this regulation. Genao stressed that Balaguer was not only the visionary behind the creation of the park, but was its main promoter through his frequent walking sessions in this space.
Similarly, councilman Julio César Martínez, who served as the project’s proponent, expressed his satisfaction at seeing the realization of an initiative that had sought to pay tribute to the former political leader for several years.
Legacy and transcendence of Joaquín Balaguer
Joaquín Balaguer, whose government administration spanned six terms, left a deep mark on the infrastructure and political life of the Dominican Republic. His urban vision materialized in numerous avenues, dams, and buildings, with the Mirador Sur Park, inaugurated on December 25, 1970, being one of his most emblematic works and one appreciated by the citizens.
