Dominican Republic and Haiti strengthen ties to bolster border security and stability
In a joint effort to ensure regional stability, the Dominican Republic and Haiti have reaffirmed their commitment to work hand in hand to promote the definitive deployment of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) in Haitian territory. This agreement was reached during a diplomatic meeting held in the border area of Dajabón, where representatives of both nations analyzed key strategies to curb organized crime.
The dialogue, led by the foreign ministries of both countries, focused on the urgency of requesting the international community to accelerate the presence of the necessary personnel, especially given the proximity of the mission’s mandate expiration, scheduled for the end of September. Both governments agreed that security in Haiti is a fundamental pillar for the tranquility of the entire island.
A critical challenge in the face of insecurity
The security situation in the neighboring country remains alarming. According to reports handled by international organizations, the violence perpetrated by armed groups has left a toll of more than 1,400 dead and hundreds injured in the second quarter of 2026 alone. Given this scenario, both Santo Domingo and Port-au-Prince are urging the United Nations to strengthen its operational support.
The consolidation of this international mission is vital to restore order, protect the civilian population, and allow the functioning of Haitian public institutions, which directly impacts the stability of our border.

Economic cooperation and consular normalization
Beyond security, the agenda included topics of vital importance for bilateral development:
- Border cooperation: It was agreed to improve coordination at border points to manage migratory flows and trade more efficiently.
- Consular services: Both governments are evaluating conditions to normalize consular operations as soon as possible, thereby facilitating communication channels and citizen assistance.
- Business boost: In a meeting with the private sector, opportunities were explored to boost trade and foster job creation in border communities.
Towards a new stage of dialogue
This approach marks a turning point after years of diplomatic tensions, including the conflicts derived from the construction of canals on the Massacre River. Following the resumption of commercial flights last May and the recent appointment of a new Haitian ambassador, the climate of understanding seems to be strengthening.
