The acclaimed theatrical drama “RED” arrives in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic prepares to host for the first time the award-winning play “RED,” a piece that achieved absolute success on Broadway by winning six Tony Awards. This intense drama will be presented from October 9th to 18th at the Ravelo Hall of the National Theater, under the direction and general production of Ramón Santana and the co-production of Madeleyn Velásquez.
The plot focuses on the legendary painter Mark Rothko during one of the most challenging and lucrative moments of his professional career. The story unfolds when the artist hires Ken, a young painter who deeply admires him, triggering an intellectual and generational clash charged with tension regarding the value of art, professional ethics, and the fear of being forgotten in the face of the emergence of pop art.
A high-level acting duel
The dramatic weight of the play rests on two established acting figures. Orestes Amador, a renowned teacher and theater director, takes on the role of Mark Rothko, while Shalim Ortiz, with a solid international career in Hollywood and Latin America, plays Ken. This combination promises to offer a memorable theatrical experience for the Dominican audience.
The staging stands out for an immersive scenographic design by Fidel López, complemented by the lighting of Ernesto López, who manage to transport the audience to Rothko’s studio in late 1950s New York.
Social commitment and art
Beyond the stage, “ROJO” transcends into a positive social impact. From September 9th to October 18th, the Café Teatro Juan Lockward will host the collective exhibition “ROJO: The color of a cause.” In this space, visual artists such as Frinee, Aram Musset, Luz Lockward, Arianna Primavera, Enrico Crivelli, and Solange Rodríguez will present unpublished works.
This initiative seeks to raise funds for the benefit of the RECREARTE program of Children International D.R., which supports the comprehensive development of children and youth in Los Tres Brazos. Attendees will be able to make donations through a QR code located on the exhibited pieces, thus participating as patrons of the project.
