Alexis Díaz Returns to the Major Leagues with the Dodgers

Milwaukee – Alexis Díaz is back in the Major Leagues and ready to debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team that acquired the 2023 All-Star reliever from the Cincinnati Reds over a month ago. The Dodgers called up Díaz and sent right-handed pitcher Julian Fernández to Triple-A Oklahoma City before Tuesday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, as the National League West-leading Dodgers tried to snap a four-game losing streak. Díaz, 28, arrived at the Dodgers in a trade on May 29 that sent minor league pitcher Mike Villani to the Reds. He had been with Triple-A Oklahoma City since then, with a record of 0-1 and an ERA of 9.64 in six appearances. While in Oklahoma City, Díaz issued seven walks and struck out three in 4 2/3 innings.

“I think there have been good things and not so good things, trying to be consistent with the delivery,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “The arm still works. The stuff is still good. But the consistency of throwing strikes is what we still haven’t seen from Alexis.

This has been a difficult season for Díaz. He began the season on the injured list with a left hamstring strain, then went 0-0 with a 12.00 ERA in six appearances with Cincinnati. He lost his job as the Reds’ closer and was eventually sent to the minors before being traded to the Dodgers. Díaz is the younger brother of New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz. He accumulated 75 saves with the Reds between 2022 and 2024. Fernández, 29, was called up on Monday and allowed two runs in two innings in a 9-1 loss to the Brewers. He is 3-0 with a 4.08 ERA in 24 games with Oklahoma City. In other news about Dodgers pitchers, right-handed pitcher Tyler Glasnow is expected to return from the injured list and be the starting pitcher for Wednesday’s game in Milwaukee. Glasnow has been dealing with shoulder inflammation and last pitched for the Dodgers on April 27. “I’m excited to have him back on the mound,” Roberts said. “He’s excited to be back on the mound. We’ll see, but I hope he pitches well.”
