This Friday, August 28, marks the tenth anniversary of the passing of Alberto Aguilera Valadéz, the iconic Mexican singer-songwriter universally known as Juan Gabriel. The legendary artist, whose voice and compositions defined Latin American popular music, left us physically in 2016 at the age of 66, due to an acute myocardial infarction in Santa Monica, California, while he was still active with his successful tour «México es Todo».
A trajectory forged from humility
Born in Parácuaro, Michoacán, in 1950, Alberto Aguilera Valadéz built an unparalleled career after moving to Ciudad Juárez during his childhood. It was in Mexico City, at the age of 21, where he consolidated his artistic identity under the name Juan Gabriel, a tribute to his mentor Juan Contreras and his father, Gabriel Aguilera. His debut album “Mi alma joven” marked the beginning of a prolific career that included:

Despite his physical absence, Juan Gabriel’s influence has not stopped growing. Posthumous projects like the album “Eterno,” which compiles 20 unreleased tracks, have allowed his voice to remain present. Although his passing was officially confirmed in 2016, the cultural phenomenon surrounding the artist has given rise to various unfounded theories about his whereabouts, which have circulated on social media for years without any real basis.
