Carlos Alcaraz continues to demonstrate his dominance at Wimbledon, overcoming obstacles and getting closer to his third consecutive title in the prestigious tournament. The Spanish tennis player, in his most recent performance, came back from a difficult match against Andrey Rublev, achieving victory with scores of 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. This victory extends his winning streak in the Grand Slam on grass to 18 matches and his undefeated streak in all events to 22. Alcaraz, seeded number 2, reached his 75th victory in a major tournament in 87 appearances, tying Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe as the fastest men to achieve 75 victories in the Open era. In the first match between two top 20 players this fortnight, Alcaraz brought out his best tennis when he was down 3-2 in the third set. He managed to defend a break opportunity for Rublev with a forehand winner. After holding his serve, Alcaraz generated his own break opportunity and didn’t allow Rublev to escape. In an eight-stroke exchange, Alcaraz ran from one corner of the court to the other and, with a strike of his right foot and a slight slide, connected a cross-court forehand winner. Alcaraz celebrated with arms outstretched and pointing to his right ear, enjoying the ovation of the public, whose noise echoed under the closed roof of the stadium. Rublev, for his part, made an “OK” sign with his hand from his chair. Barely ten minutes later, the set was for Alcaraz. Alcaraz’s next challenge will be Cam Norrie, a semi-finalist in 2022, on Tuesday, for a place in the semi-finals.

I’ve always said it’s about believing in yourself. It doesn’t matter if you’re down a set. Tennis is a sport that can change in a single point. A point can completely change the match, turn everything around.

At 22 years old, Alcaraz already has five Grand Slam trophies and will play his twelfth appearance in the quarterfinals of a major tournament, tying for the second-most for any man before turning 23, surpassed only by Boris Becker’s 13. Alcaraz hasn’t lost a match since April 20 against Holger Rune in the Barcelona final.
