The city of Lima has become the epicenter of continental sport during the celebration of Panam Sports Week. On this second day, the legendary Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell, recognized worldwide for having clocked 9.74 seconds in the 100-meter dash, was the featured figure as he received a well-deserved tribute for his brilliant career on the athletics tracks.
The central event of the day was the forum dedicated to women in sports, a space for reflection where the strategies necessary to guarantee gender equity in all disciplines were analyzed. The discussion panel featured renowned figures such as the former President of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, alongside prominent athletes like rower Jane Thornton, pentathlete Yane Marques, and volleyball player Cecilia Tait. Lima 2027 and the future of Pan American sport
Panam Sports Week, taking place from August 23 to 28, brings together leaders from the 41 national Olympic committees. The schedule of activities includes visits to the infrastructure that will host the Lima 2027 Pan American Games, as well as the highly anticipated general assembly where the host for the 2029 Junior Pan American Games will be decided.
On the other hand, the relevance of this meeting was ratified by the Peruvian authorities. The President of Peru received the high-ranking officials of international Olympism, reaffirming the country’s confidence in organizing world-class events. This institutional support seeks to consolidate sport as a key engine for social transformation and youth development in the region.
