Wimbledon Prevents Nuno Borges from Honoring Diogo Jota with Portuguese Shirt

London – The Wimbledon tournament prevented Portuguese tennis player Nuno Borges from using a Portugal shirt during his match against Karen Khachanov, in a gesture of tribute to the deceased footballer Diogo Jota. The tournament, known for its strict dress code that demands the use of immaculate white, only allows small exceptions with lines of color in the clothing.

They decided to offer the tennis players the possibility of paying tribute to him with a black ribbon. Both Borges and doubles player Francisco Cabral wore it.

Faced with the tragic loss of Diogo Jota and his brother André, who died in a traffic accident, Wimbledon offered tennis players the possibility of wearing a black armband as a sign of mourning. Borges, after his defeat, shared his impressions of the situation:

“I know Wimbledon isn’t usually very flexible with clothing, but they told me I could do something to honor Jota, so I think it was a good gesture. He was a great footballer, it was a tragedy.”

The tennis player revealed that the option of using the Portugal shirt was initially considered:

“At first we talked about wearing the Portugal jersey when going out on the court. I even tried to find a white one, but they rejected it, so we ended up doing something a little smaller.”
