American tennis has had an outstanding performance in the 2025 season. Madison Keys won the title at the Australian Open, and Coco Gauff followed suit at the French Open last month. In addition, eight American tennis players reached the round of 16 at Roland Garros, the most in 40 years. Three American men, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Ben Shelton, reached the top 10 for the first time since 2006. As for the women, Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Keys, and Emma Navarro remain in the top 10. Wimbledon started with high expectations and 35 Americans in the main draw, the highest number since 1999. However, the results have not been so favorable for the United States so far. In the first week, marked by surprises and defeats of important players, including Gauff and Pegula in the first round, only four Americans remain in the fourth round. No American tennis player has won the singles title at Wimbledon since Serena Williams in 2016, and no American man has achieved it since Pete Sampras in 2000. Will the remaining players be able to secure their place in history this week? Below, we analyze the Americans still in competition and their path so far.

Women

Emma Navarro (No. 10)

Players she has defeated:

  • Petra Kvitova
  • Veronika Kudermetova
  • Barbora Krejcikova
Next opponent: Mirra Andreeva (No. 7) Navarro surprised the tennis world with her straight-sets victory over Gauff last year, reaching the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career. A year later, the 24-year-old tennis player is accustomed to going far in major tournaments, having reached the quarterfinals of the US Open and the semifinals of the Australian Open. Despite a 4-3 record on grass this season before Wimbledon, and after a first-round loss at the French Open, she was not considered a favorite at the start of the tournament. However, her impressive performance in the first three rounds, including victories over two former Wimbledon champions, has changed that perception. In her first-round match against Kvitova, Navarro allowed the two-time winner only four games. On Saturday, Navarro frustrated Krejcikova’s title defense with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 comeback. Despite Krejcikova’s obvious discomfort, Navarro remained focused and committed only 11 unforced errors. This is Navarro’s fifth appearance in the round of 16 in the last six Grand Slam tournaments, tying with Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka. However, Navarro’s path becomes even more difficult. She will face Andreeva, an 18-year-old and the highest-ranked player in the bottom half of the draw, on Monday. Andreeva, a semi-finalist at the 2024 French Open, will seek to reach her first Wimbledon quarter-final.

“I think it’s fun to play and watch an opponent like that. She has power, but she can also be aggressive. She’s going to return a lot of balls. She’s really strong running, coming out of the corners. She’ll make you hit that extra ball.”

Emma Navarro
The winner of Monday’s match will face Ekaterina Alexandrova or Belinda Bencic in the quarterfinals.Amanda Anisimova (No. 13)

Players she has defeated:

  • Yulia Putintseva
  • Renata Zarazua
  • Dalma Galfi
Next opponent: Linda Noskova (No. 30) Anisimova has had a breakthrough season. The 23-year-old tennis player, who returned after a break due to mental health issues in early 2024, won the most important title of her career at the Qatar Open level 1000 in February and has reached the fourth round of the French Open and her first grass court final at the Queen’s Club last month. She is currently ranked number 12 in the rankings, the highest of her career, and could enter the top 10 in the next rankings. Anisimova achieved a convincing victory in the first round, winning 6-0, 6-0 against Putintseva in just 44 minutes. She has lost only one set so far in the tournament and was firm in her deciding set against Galfi in the third round. Anisimova was satisfied with her grass court game upon reaching the second week.

“I felt like my game really worked that week, and I felt really good on the grass. I was trying to bring some of that energy here. So far I feel like my grass season has had a very good start, but also, at the same time, it’s not a very long season”.

Amanda Anisimova
Anisimova will have the opportunity to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the second time in her career, and for the first time since 2022. She has faced Noskova only once, losing in the round of 64 at Indian Wells shortly before her break from the sport in 2023, and never on grass. If Anisimova secures the victory on Sunday, she would be the favorite in her quarterfinal match against Sonay Kartal or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Taylor Fritz
Taylor Fritz ha ganado cinco de sus 10 títulos en césped y ha llegado a los cuartos de final de Wimbledon dos veces.

Men

Taylor Fritz (No. 5)

Players he has defeated:

  • Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard
  • Gabriel Diallo
  • Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Next opponent: Jordan Thompson Fritz, the highest-ranked American, arrived at the All England Club after winning grass court titles in Stuttgart and Eastbourne. He has won five of his 10 titles on grass. Fritz, a two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist, needed deciding sets in his first two matches. In his first match, he had to withstand the serve of Mpetshi Perricard, who set the Wimbledon record with the fastest serve at 153 miles per hour, and fight for the victory. After losing the first set against Diallo, he fought to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (0), 4-6, 6-3. Fritz’s 109 total games in the first two rounds were the third-most in history. In his third-round match against Davidovich Fokina, Fritz dominated, winning in four sets. He will then face Thompson, a 31-year-old Australian ranked number 44, on Sunday. They have met twice before, splitting the series. Thompson won their most recent encounter and their only grass-court match in the quarterfinals at Queen’s Club in 2024. Fritz said he felt confident going into the match, but also knew that Thompson could be a challenge.

“I think I’m playing great tennis. I think there are even some things I could feel that I can do better. I feel like just those things, then I think I would be… I don’t think there would be anything I could do better on the court. I’m very happy with my game. I think Thompson is going to be tricky. He’s probably going to serve and volley a lot, he’s going to ‘chip’ me a lot. He beat me at Queen’s last year. He’s good on grass. I think it’s a different type of match than the ones I’ve been playing. I think it’s going to be a lot of trying to break my rhythm and get me out of my routine of just serving and hitting, so, for sure it’s going to be different”.

Taylor Fritz
If Fritz were to win, he would play against the winner of the fourth-round match between Karen Khachanov and Kamil Majchrzak and would perhaps have the best chance of reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals.

Ben Shelton (No. 10)

Players he has defeated:

  • Alex Bolt
  • Rinky Hijikata
  • Marton Fucsovics
Next opponent: Lorenzo Sonego Shelton, 22, has already reached two Grand Slam semi-finals (US Open 2023 and Australian Open 2025), won two ATP titles and entered the top 10 last month. He is now in the second week of Wimbledon for the second consecutive year thanks to three dominant performances in the first week. Shelton needed two tiebreaks in his first-round match, but was imposing in his second-round match. Shelton won his second-round match in just 70 seconds, with three aces and an unreturned serve. With a clinical victory over Fucsovics, he has yet to lose a set in the tournament and will be the favorite in Monday’s match against Sonego. This will be the third consecutive Grand Slam in which Shelton faces Sonego, and he was victorious at the Australian Open and the French Open. Shelton has a 3-1 record against Sonego.

“He’s a great player. I played tight against him in Australia this year; I played tight against him in Roland Garros. It’s fitting that we’re facing each other here at Wimbledon. So it’s going to be difficult. I know he’s playing really well, grass is a great surface for him. Great serve, great forehand, a lot of energy. It’s going to be difficult, but I like my chances right now, the way I’m playing, the way the crowd is helping with the energy. We’re going to keep going with this”.

Ben Shelton
If Shelton were to beat Sonego and reach his first quarterfinal at the All England Club, he would likely have a difficult opponent waiting for him, Jannik Sinner.
