Aspinall Wishes Jones the Best After His Retirement and Focuses on the Title
English fighter Tom Aspinall has expressed his best wishes to Jon Jones following his retirement from the world of mixed martial arts (MMA). Aspinall, who recently became the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, regrets not having had the opportunity to officially face Jones for the title. Aspinall, with a record of 15-3, obtained the undisputed title last Saturday, after UFC CEO Dana White announced Jones’ retirement. Aspinall had been waiting for a unification fight against Jones after winning the interim title in November 2023. He even defended his interim title in July 2024. In an interview, Aspinall acknowledged that, from a personal perspective, he would have liked Jones to continue competing. However, he respects Jones’s decision and is pleased that the situation is behind them.Aspinall also added that he does not personally know Jones and wishes him the best in his personal life. He acknowledges that Jones has had his own challenges and hopes he finds happiness. With Jones’ retirement, 32-year-old Aspinall is preparing to defend his heavyweight title in the near future. Despite having nothing official on the agenda, he hopes to fight twice this year.“I’ve always said that I wasn’t chasing Jon, but the heavyweight title. Jones would have been an incredible victory, but the opponent never mattered. What was important to me was being the best in the world. The other things were irrelevant. I don’t worry too much,” Aspinall stated.
