San Francisco Giants Secure Bob Melvin Through 2026

The San Francisco Giants have demonstrated their confidence in manager Bob Melvin by exercising the option on his contract for the 2026 season. The news comes as the team is in third place in the National League West Division, with a record of 45-40. Melvin, 63, returned to the Bay Area to manage the Giants last year, a job he always dreamed of having, after having been a catcher in the organization.

“Having the opportunity to work alongside Bob every day, we are very fortunate to have such an experienced leader and one of the most respected managers in baseball,” said Giants president of baseball operations, Buster Posey.

Melvin, three-time Manager of the Year, has a regular season record of 1,642-1,547 in his career and eight postseason appearances, managing teams such as Arizona, Seattle, Oakland, San Diego and now the Giants. In his first season at the helm of the team, last year, the team had a record of 80-82.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this group. I believe in what we are building here, and I appreciate the trust that the Giants ownership group, Greg, Buster, Larry (Baer), Zack (Minasian) and the rest of the Giants organization have shown in me and our staff. We have a lot of work to do this year, and I am looking forward to the work ahead,” Melvin said.

Melvin, a native of Palo Alto, California, attended the University of California-Berkeley and played for his hometown Giants from 1986 to 1988. He replaced Gabe Kapler, who was fired three days before the end of the 2023 season. The Giants haven’t reached the playoffs or had a winning record since they finished with a franchise-record 107 wins to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, with 106 wins, for the National League West Division title in 2021. In other Giants-related news, the team placed infielder Christian Koss on the 10-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain and recalled outfielder Luis Matos from Triple-A Sacramento.
