Mystics Could Trade Aaliyah Edwards

The Washington Mystics are considering the possibility of trading second-year power forward Aaliyah Edwards, according to sources close to the team.

Several teams have contacted the Mystics to inquire about Edwards, and Washington is listening to offers.

Edwards, selected sixth in the 2024 WNBA draft, has seen her minutes reduced this season after having a more important role on the team last year. The Mystics have a crowded frontcourt that also includes young stars Kiki Iriafen and Shakira Austin, in addition to veteran Stefanie Dolson.

In her rookie season, Edwards averaged 7.6 points and 5.6 rebounds in 21.8 minutes per game, starting in 17 of the 34 games for the Mystics, who suffered several injuries. In her second year, she averages 4.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in 14.1 minutes per game, coming off the bench.

Edwards was an All-American at UConn and a two-time Olympian with the Canadian national team. She missed the first four games of the Mystics’ regular season due to a lower back contusion she suffered during training camp.

Washington is in the midst of a new era, with a new general manager and coaching staff this offseason. However, a third of the way through the 2025 season, the Mystics have exceeded preseason expectations with an 8-9 record, 0.5 games out of a playoff spot, thanks in large part to the success of their lottery-picked rookie duo: Iriafen and Sonia Citron.

Edwards could be an attractive acquisition for a team as a young player with great potential and who will still be under a rookie scale contract next year, when most of the league’s veterans will become free agents in anticipation of a new collective bargaining agreement.

The WNBA trade deadline is August 7th.
