Public Health Network guarantees bed availability and improves resolution capacity
The executive director of the National Health Service (SNS), Dr. Julio Landrón, announced that the Public Network maintains an availability of over 53% in hospitalization beds. This achievement is the direct result of a process of modernization, strengthening of response capacity, and optimization in patient care that has been implemented over the last six years.
According to current statistics presented by the head of the SNS, hospital bed occupancy stands at 43%, while Intensive Care Units (ICU) record 71% occupancy. These figures allow the system to have more than 2,500 general beds and more than 50 critical care spaces available daily to address any eventuality.
Hospital transformation and efficiency
Landrón emphasized that the transformation of the Public Network since 2020 has been comprehensive, encompassing the construction and remodeling of infrastructure, the acquisition of cutting-edge technology, and the digitalization of administrative and medical processes.
Today we have modern, equipped hospitals with greater capacity to respond in a timely manner. We have advanced towards a Public Network that guarantees humanized, dignified, and quality services to the population.

As an example of this efficiency, the official highlighted the case of the Dr. Darío Contreras Trauma Hospital, where waiting times have decreased drastically. A patient who previously could remain admitted for up to three months now receives timely surgical care and, depending on their clinical condition, can be discharged in an average of four days.
New projects and openness to dialogue
- Service recovery: The SNS will soon intervene in the Pediatric Orthopedics area of the Darío Contreras Hospital, which had been closed since 2018.
- Increase in care: During the first semester of 2026, the Public Network reached a record figure of 25 million services provided, exceeding the number of consultations recorded in 2019 by 10 million.
- Invitation to transparency: Landrón extended an invitation to former health sector managers to visit the hospital centers and verify the modernization of the system firsthand.
The director of the SNS concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to continue investing in human talent, infrastructure, and technological equipment. The goal is to consolidate a health model that prioritizes efficiency and warmth in treatment, leaving behind the image of hospitals as overcrowded spaces without the capacity to respond.
