Dominican Republic boosts its digital competitiveness at the 41st CANTO Conference

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel), Guido Gómez Mazara, highlighted in Punta Cana the fundamental role of digital connectivity as a strategic engine for economic growth and social inclusion in the Caribbean region. During the opening of the 41st Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition of the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunication Organizations (CANTO), the official reaffirmed the country’s commitment to leading the technological transformation.

Key investments and technological vision

Gómez Mazara emphasized that the Dominican Republic is executing an ambitious plan to modernize its digital structure. Among the pillars of this project, he highlighted an investment exceeding 500 million dollars destined for digital exchange infrastructure, in addition to the expansion of connectivity through submarine cables. Likewise, the country is advancing in its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and seeks to position itself in the global semiconductor industry.

The Dominican Republic does not just consume technology, but is inspired to produce it.

Challenges and goals in telecommunications

In the field of telecommunications, Indotel maintains a roadmap focused on strengthening competition and reducing the digital divide. The key points of this agenda include:

• Expansion and optimization of 4G and 5G networks throughout the national territory.
• Efficient management of the radio spectrum to improve service quality.
• Implementation of regulatory policies that encourage private investment.
• Elimination of access barriers derived from high costs or geographical limitations.

Regional integration and Caribbean cooperation

A significant moment of the event was the formalization of Indotel’s entry into CANTO. This participation marks the first time the Dominican regulatory body has joined as an active member in this annual conference. For Gómez Mazara, this alliance is vital to unify criteria in the face of global technological challenges.
