Ministry of Women celebrates 44 years of history in defense of gender equality
The Ministry of Women commemorated its 44th anniversary this Tuesday, reaffirming its commitment to the promotion of women’s rights and gender equality in the Dominican Republic. The celebration began with a thanksgiving mass at the Primatial Cathedral of America, where authorities, collaborators, and representatives from various sectors linked to the institution gathered.
During the event, Minister Gloria Reyes highlighted the significant progress achieved over more than four decades. She emphasized that the sustained effort has allowed for the integration of women’s rights as a cross-cutting axis in the public policies of the Dominican State, while urging not to lower the guard in the fight against violence and the reduction of social inequalities.
A commitment to prevention and protection
The religious ceremony, officiated by priest David Soriano, included moments of prayer dedicated to the victims of violence, as well as special recognition for the children and adolescents who have been left orphaned due to this issue. Likewise, a message of support was raised for the staff who work daily in the prevention and care of situations of vulnerability.
It is essential to continue working to expand opportunities for women and ensure a safe environment, where gender equality is a tangible reality for the entire Dominican population.
Ministry of Women
Institutional evolution at the service of the country
The path toward the current institutional framework has been a process of constant evolution since its founding in 1982. Below are the most relevant milestones in the entity’s history:
- 1982: Creation of the General Directorate for the Promotion of Women.
- 1999: Foundation of the Secretariat of State for Women, assuming the coordination of public policies.
- 2010: Adoption of the current name, Ministry of Women, through Decree 56-10.
As a symbol of their current work, during the mass, key elements of their management were presented before the altar, such as the Magaly Pineda School of Equality and the Shelter system, which provide comprehensive protection to women in at-risk situations. With this trajectory, the Ministry of Women consolidates itself as a fundamental pillar in the protection of human rights and social development in the country.
