Garrett Mitchell Seeks Second Medical Opinion on Shoulder Injury

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell is seeking a second medical opinion on his injured left shoulder, following the recommendation to undergo surgery.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy reported that team doctor William Raasch recommended surgery for Mitchell, who suffered the shoulder injury during a rehabilitation assignment. Mitchell will seek a second opinion in Los Angeles with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who already performed surgery on the same shoulder two years ago.

Murphy indicated that the surgery could keep Mitchell out of action for another eight to ten weeks. The player has been on the injured list since April 26 due to an oblique issue. This possible new surgery represents another setback for the player, selected in the first round of the 2020 draft. Mitchell has participated in a total of 141 games since his debut in the Major Leagues in 2022.

That kid has been through a lot, four years trying to complete a season. My heart goes out to him and his family. It’s really difficult.

Pat Murphy, Brewers Manager
Mitchell was preparing to return from the oblique injury when he injured his shoulder playing for the Triple-A Nashville Sounds last week. Before going on the injured list, he was batting .206 with an on-base percentage of .286, no home runs and three RBIs in 25 games for Milwaukee this season. According to Murphy, Raasch indicated that some anchors from Mitchell’s 2023 shoulder surgery had come loose. Mitchell missed a large part of the 2023 season due to a labrum tear. When available, Mitchell has proven to be productive. The 26-year-old player bats .254 with an on-base percentage of .333, a slugging percentage of .433, 13 home runs, 40 RBIs, and 23 steals in his 141 career regular season games. In other Brewers injury news, Murphy announced that center fielder Blake Perkins is scheduled to begin his rehab assignment with Nashville this week, and right-handed pitcher Brandon Woodruff is scheduled to pitch for Nashville over the weekend. Perkins hasn’t played this season due to a fracture in his right shin suffered during batting practice in spring training. Woodruff, a two-time All-Star, hasn’t pitched in the Major Leagues since undergoing shoulder surgery after the 2023 season.
